Dr. Bryan McConnell has been a student of holistic medicine since his teen years. Teen-age acne motivated a keen interest in the body’s ability to heal itself and but more importantly, patient responsibility for a healthy body.
Dr. McConnell was raised on a rural farm in northeast Colorado, lived three years in Oregon while growing up, and graduated from high school in Fort Collins. After working for about a year in construction, he entered the ministry at the age of 19, and spent the next 5 years of his life traveling and preaching the gospel, most of this time in Kansas.
Bryan was married to Teresa in 1988 where they lived in the Denver area for eight years. During this time he attended the community college of Aurora and then enrolled in the University of Colorado at Denver, working on premedical studies. He also attended Colorado School of Healing Arts for massage therapy training while working in the copier repair service business.
He enrolled in the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1995 in Tempe, Arizona, and upon graduating in 1999, he and his wife started the first naturopathic medical clinic , The First Resort, in Green Valley, south of Tucson. Treatments for the mostly geriatric population included lifestyle counseling, nutraceutical and botanical medicine, detoxification therapies, and heavy metal reduction. Dr. McConnell’s love continues to be centered on lifestyle choices, and the summary of his mission statement is inspiring others to make healthier choices in the realm of diet and exercise.
Dr. McConnell obtains a certification in massage therapy, a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, additional certifications in, Cranial Osteopathy, Environmental Medicine, Oxidative Therapies, ACAM Chelation Therapy, Prolotherapy, and a special interest in cellular detoxification therapies. Dr. McConnell conducted a controlled double blind/crossover with placebos IRB approved research at Midwestern University of Osteopathic Medicine to determine the effectiveness of Amazon herbs in a group of male cyclists. The research measured the increase in performance and recovery time over a period of 2 months. Findings from the research data showed a significant increase in overall performance and recovery time while on the herbs. The subjects did not change any of thier lifestyles habits during the research period and did not know if they were taking herbs or placebo. The amount of herbs given were specific to the wieght of the individual. The products and placebo were supplied by the Amazon Herb Company. Formulas included were Sumacazon, Warrior and Recovazon. This is the first botanical research allowed in an ostopathic institution and with IRB approval. The research is expected to be published by the end of 2009.
A lifelong student of optimum nutrition and exercise, Dr. McConnell portrays a healthy example and is an avid cyclist, having participated in El Tour de Tucson among other group rides for the last seven years.
